The Kolkata Metro, a speedy transport system serving the city of Kolkata in West Bengal, India. As February 2021,it has two operational lines. Dakshineswar to Kavi Subhash it is 31.36 km(19.49 miles) and Salt Lake Sector V to Phoolbagan it is 7.205 km(23.96 miles).

Kolkata Metro is the busiest metro system in India based on passengers carried per service. Each service carries an average of 2,465 people, while Delhi carries 1,111. Kolkata Metro carries around 7,00,00 people daily. The daily and annual ridership has consistently risen since 1984. After the completion of the whole corridor from Dum Dum to Mahanayak Uttam Kumar in 1995, there was a huge leap in ridership. Low fares and fast and convenient travel have contributed to the high ridership figures. During the 2019 Durga Puja, there was a record ridership of 922,000.
Kolkata Metro History
In September 1919, a committee named The Imperial Legislative Council was set up by W. E. Crum that recommended a metro line for Kolkata. Then the line was supposed to connect Bagmari to Benaras Road, Salkia in Hawrah in the west of the a tunnel beneath Hooghly River. In Kolkata Metro history all construction costs were Rs. 4.28 crore (USD 600,000). The raised dead line was 1925-1926.
The raised line was 10.4 km (6.5 miles) long and 4 km (2.5 miles) shorter than new East-West Metro. The East-West Metro would connect East Bengal Railway in Bagmari and Benaeas Road. At that time fare costs were 3 anna (Rs.0.1875, USD 0.0026) for the full trip. The East-West Metro named “East-West Tube Railway” was proposed in Kolkata in 1921 by Harley Dalrymple-Hay.
Planning: The Kolkata Metro was planned in the 1920.But after 50 years in 1970 construction started. The first underground stretch of The Kolkata Metro is opened in 1984.Those station are Bhawanipur (now Netaji Bhawan) to Esplanade. Metro Railway, Kolkata and Kolkata Metro Rail corporation are the owners and operator of the system since 2010, December. Metro Railway, Kolkata, became the 17th zone of the Indian Railways on 29 December, 2010.Then The Kolkata Metro is completely owned and funded by Ministry of Railways. It is the only metro in India which is controlled by Indian Railways. There are around 300 daily trips carrying more than 700,000 passengers.
Construction: Kolkata Metro, India’s first metro, was constructed as a completely indigenous process. It has a traditional cut-and-cover method. Kolkata Metro was driven shield tunneling was chosen. As a result, all process took nearly 23 years to completely constructed the 17 km (11 miles) in underground. Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India, who was the foundation stone of this Kolkata Metro project on December 29, 1972 and construction work of the Kolkata Metro was started in 1973-74.
In 1984 service began on October 24, with the commissioning of a partial commercial service was covered a distance of 3.4 km (2.11 miles). Day by day the process was continued and then some route was created .In 1984 Dum Dum to Belgachhia 2.15 km(1.34 miles) stretch was constructed. This stretch was extended to Tollygunge in 1986 and covered 4.24 km (2.63 miles), and It make the service available over a distance of 9.79 km (6.08 miles) with 11 stations.
After eight years in 1994 Belgachhia-Shyambazer section and Dam Dam-Belgachchhia stretch was opened on 13 August. Esplanade-Chandni Chowk stretch was opened on 2 October, 1994. In 1995 Shyambazer–Shobhabazar-Girish Park- Chandni Chowk Central sections were started.
In 1995 entire stretch of metro named Mahatma Gandhi Metro Station (1.80 km/1.12 miles) filled the gap on 27 September. Between 2009-2019 two sections are opened named Mahanayak Uttam Kumar-Kavi Nazrul and Kavi Nazrul-Kavi Subhash.Dam to Noapara 2.59 km (1.61miles) stretch was opened on 10 July in 2013.
In February 2021 this stretch expand to Dakshineswar from Noapara (4.1 km).It was inaugurated on 22 February and commercially using from 23 February.
