Hitachi to supply 67 lifts and escalators to NSC Railways in the Philippines

Manila, Philippines (Urban Transportation News): Hitachi, Ltd. today announced that Hitachi Elevator Philippines Corporation (Hitachi Elevator Philippines), a subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. engaged in the installation and maintenance of elevators and escalators in the Philippines, has received an order for 67 units of elevators and escalators. The development of the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) Phase 1 project as its first railway system project.

The 38 km long railway line, which connects Malolos in Bulacan Province with Tutuban in Manila, serves 7 stations, benefiting over 200,000 passengers daily. The NSCR is part of a holistic initiative of the Philippine government to expand existing mass transit in the capital Manila and surrounding areas to ease traffic congestion in and around the capital city.

The project consists of two contract packages by two different contractors. Contract Package 1, called CP01, will be manufactured by the Taisi-DMCI joint venture and awarded to Hitachi Elevators Philippines, 13 elevators and 26 escalators for four stations in Valenzuela in Manila, Mekouan, Marillao and Bokau in Bulacan Province. Contract Package 2 called CP02, which will be manufactured by Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co., Ltd., also awarded Hitachi Elevator Philippines to deliver 8 elevators and 20 escalators to three stations of Balagatas, Guiguinto and Malolos in Bulacan Province has done. All the units are to be set up by May 2023.

The size of the Philippine elevators and escalators market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2019 to 2025(1). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, construction projects around the world have been halted and the demand for elevators and escalators in the Philippines has fallen to around 2,300 units per year, about 3,700 units per year. As the world moves towards the next normal, it is anticipated that the elevator and escalator industry will expand significantly in the coming years due to increasing urbanization and rapid expansion of the construction sector.
