Delhi Metro starts driverless train operations on Pink Line

New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) today started driverless metro train operation (Unattended Train Operation) on its largest corridor – Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar (Pink Line). Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri and Transport Minister, NCT of Delhi, Kailash Gehlot today conducted Driverless Train Operations (DTO) on 59 km long Pink Line through videoconferencing in the presence of Secretary, MoHUA, Durga Shanker Mishra. inaugurated. DMRC Managing Director Mangu Singh and other senior officials of DMRC.

With this, the fully automated network of Delhi Metro expands to around 97 kms, which is the fourth largest in the world and the only DTO network in India. The DTO facility was introduced on the Magenta Line in 2020 with which Delhi Metro entered the elite league of 7% of the world’s metros that operate a fully automated metro network.

Driverless train operation will bring greater flexibility in train operation, reducing human intervention and human errors. It will also help in improving the availability of coaches for the service. Driverless trains will eliminate the manual process of pre-induction checks, reducing the burden on train operators later. Parking on the stabling line in the depot will also be done automatically.

DMRC has started taking advantage of driverless operations on its Magenta Line in the context of increasing availability of coaches for service. The reliability of trains has increased manifold due to exhaustive self-tests carried out before joining everyday service, thereby automatically eliminating all possibilities of human error. With longer network under driverless train operation, the profit will increase further.

In DTO, initially the train operator will be present on the train to instil a sense of confidence and assistance. The high level of clinical characteristics of DTOs will help in the transition from traditional time-based maintenance to position-based maintenance. This will also reduce the maintenance down time of trains.

After the completion of Phase 4, when driverless operations are available on the Aerocity-Tughlakabad Silver Line along with the extension of Pink and Magenta Lines, DMRC will become the world’s second largest driverless metro network with 160 km of DTO-equipped corridor . ,
